Catastrophic Collapse of Water Supply Reservoirs in Urban Areas

چکیده
The paper presents a two-dimensional unsteady flow model based on the finite volume method combined with anapproximate Riemann solver to solve the governing equations on an unstructured triangular grid. A major feature of the model is that it isconservative, can deal with wetting and drying processes, resolve shocks and can handle complex geometry. The model is applied to acase study involving the collapse of a water supply reservoir. These reservoirs are generally located in elevated positions in residentialareas. Therefore, they represent a potential risk to life and property. The model is used to predict the progress of the flood ensuing fromthe collapse of a water supply reservoir. The model is efficient, capable of simulating flow over a dry bed, resolves shocks, simulatesflow around complex geometry and obstacles and includes the influence of steep bed slopes and friction.

متن کاملCatastrophic Regime Shift in Water Reservoirs and São Paulo Water Supply Crisis
The relation between rainfall and water accumulated in reservoirs comprises nonlinear feedbacks. Here we show that they may generate alternative equilibrium regimes, one of high water-volume, the other of low water-volume. Reservoirs can be seen as socio-environmental systems at risk of regime shifts, characteristic of tipping point transitions. We analyze data from stored water, rainfall, and ...

Introduction Iran is seriously suffering from economic and social drought. Theoretically, this problem can be resolved by rebalancing the supply and demand of water through the development of supplied water resources and implementing serious water demand reduction programs. However, the current structure of Iranchr(chr(chr(chr(chr('39')39chr('39'))39chr(chr('39')39chr('39')))39chr(chr(chr('39...

Plankton diversity, physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a were analyzed in two shallow urban reservoirs with different trophic degrees on Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. High eutrophication levels were observed in Apipucos reservoir, while Prata reservoir was considered oligotrophic. Values reported for physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a differed among the stud...

N accessible shale deposits have dramatically increased global gas reserves and are touted as a bridge to a clean energy future. For example, in the U.S., where shale gas is projected to comprise 49% of national natural gas production by 2035, proponents argue that shale gas production can provide energy independence, create employment, and stimulate regional economies. Amidst this optimism, ho...
